Playing in nature: benefits for mental and physical health
Children's distancing from nature is a cause for concern for parents and child health experts around the world.
In a survey by Unilever, which interviewed more than 1,000 parents in Brazil, 97% said that their children's most frequent activity was watching TV or videos. According to IBOPE, Brazilian children spend an average of 5 hours and 35 minutes a day in front of the television.
By spending so much time on technology, children fail to enjoy the benefits of playing outdoors. These include improved motor coordination, better sleep quality, and improved vision, focus, and attention, in addition to the numerous benefits for physical health.
Children with mental disorders especially benefit from contact with nature. Studies show that the use of Ritalin by children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can be reduced by up to 50% through a program of contact with parks twice a week.
In the special report “Playing in nature: benefits for mental and physical health”, we consulted pediatricians, psychologists and pedagogues to better understand the importance of this gesture.
